Our vessel has just completed our 6,000hr manufacturer specified top end rebuild for our two C32 1625 hp Caterpillar Main engines and two Onan generator rebuilds. The surrounding dock area was also kept clear of parts and equipment throughout the works. Being responsible for taking crew many miles out to sea game fishing, it is critical that I have confidence in the mechanic systems of my boat "Goliath". Having stepped up in size from a well-appointed recently re-powered modern engine 32' Cresta to an older 42 Bertram with 30 year old 450hp 6v92 Detroits, it's fair to say I had some concerns about the long term serviceability and reliability of the engines in the new-old boat. Even though the engines seemed to be performing well, old electrical systems and less than ideal maintenance regiments by the previous owner meant that at the very least a major modernisation program was required. Once I had established that a rebuild (over a new engine re-power) was the better option in that only minor modifications to the Bertram's engine room were required, I began to research Detroit engine builders. There are many in Australia, however the team at Onboard Engineering were consistently mentioned as the go-to team for Detroit builds. As luck would have it, Andrew Stubbs from Onboard Engineering had recently rebuilt the 6v92s in his own boat Triton, and having reviewed this work, a plan to rebuild Goliath's engines was hatched. The results of the rebuild are outstanding - largely because the fulsome approach in which Onboard Engineering conducted the re-power as well as the organised and professional manner in which the work was carried out. Engines, generator, fire systems, refrigeration, fuel systems, exhaust systems, shafts and seals, props, sea strainers and oil changing systems were either updated or installed. Mechanically, the vessel is brand new and without doubt punches well above its already considerable weight. The team were very easy to deal with in all respects and unforeseen variations were discussed in advance to ensure I was aware of the situation and I was provided with regular updates. The final layout and configuration was considerably neater than the original engine installation and as a consequence the serviceability has improved dramatically. Above all else, the biggest impression I have been left with is that the team take pride in the finished product and were as excited about the final result as I was - and having improved my cruising speed from 13.5 to 19.5 knots and top end from 20.9 to 27 knots, the boat has totally transformed. I AM VERY EXCITED!!! Above all else, the boat is now safe and reliable and gives me the confidence that it can be used for its intended purpose. I strongly recommend Onboard Engineering to anyone who is looking for a reliable, knowledgeable and professional outfit to maintain or re-power their vessel.
